Dino Melaye Quits PDP, Blames Party’s Inability to Deliver Good Governance
Former Senator Dino Melaye has officially dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), saying the party no longer has what it takes to lead Nigeria in the right direction.
Melaye, who once represented Kogi West in the National Assembly and was the PDP’s governorship candidate in Kogi during the 2023 elections, made the announcement on Thursday via a resignation letter he personally addressed to the PDP chairman of his ward – Ward 1, Ayetoro-Gbede, Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State.
In the letter which he shared on his X official account on Thursday 31st Jul,2025. Dino didn’t mince words. According to him, PDP has lost its ability to rescue Nigeria from what he described as “political cankerworms” eating deep into the country’s future.
“I hereby tender my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party at all levels of involvement. This decision has become imperative due to the lack of potency and capacity by the party to deliver the Nigerian people from the prevailing political cankerworms,” Melaye wrote.
He further stated that after serious reflection, he can no longer “in good conscience” be part of a party whose agenda he no longer believes in.
“I can no longer in good conscience participate in the activities of the party or lend my support to her agenda,” he added.
Melaye asked the party to consider his letter a formal withdrawal from all PDP layers, saying his decision takes immediate effect.
Despite the strong tone, he ended the letter on a respectful note, thanking the PDP for the opportunity to serve under its platform while he was a member.
The dramatic exit of Melaye raises serious questions about the future of the PDP in Kogi State and beyond, especially coming from a prominent figure who has consistently been one of the party’s most vocal supporters.
