Labour Party Factions Fight Over Accusation of Trying to Remove Tinubu
The Labour Party (LP) is in another big fight. This time, one side of the party is accusing the other of trying to remove President Bola Tinubu through a protest that they say looks like a coup plan.
A man named Abayomi Arabambi, who says he is the party’s spokesperson, wrote a letter to security officers on Tuesday. He claimed that top LP members, including Peter Obi, NLC President Joe Ajaero, and Senator Victor Umeh, are planning a “One-Million Man March” to remove Tinubu’s government and take back their old party office in Utako, Abuja.
But another LP leader, Nenadi Usman, strongly denied this. Through her media adviser, Ken Asogwa, she said the accusation is a wicked lie meant to confuse Nigerians and paint LP leaders as criminals.
She said, “We don’t know about any protest. Nobody from our side is planning to match on the streets or fight to take back the old office. We already left that building and found a safer place after the court said we are the true LP leaders.”
Usman added that after the Supreme Court judgment on April 4, 2025, which gave her leadership power, they wrote to the police and DSS to remove people still staying in the old office. But since nothing was done, they moved out peacefully.
She laughed at the idea that LP wants to forcefully take back a building they are no longer using. She also warned that the worst part of Arabambi’s letter is the part that tries to link a protest to a coup. “How can a peaceful protest be called a plan to remove the government? That lie is dangerous,” she said. “This is exactly what they used to do during military rule – accuse innocent people of fake coup plots just to shut them up.”
This kind of false claim is a dangerous move and a plan to arrest respected LP members for doing nothing wrong. She also warned that the DSS has already started harassing some LP officials because of the petition.
“This road is dangerous. It can destroy our democracy,” she warned.
She then begged security agencies to properly investigate who is behind the false story and called on Nigerians not to believe what she called a “badly written political movie.”
“We stand for peace and law. We want Nigerians to know the truth and not be fooled by this kind of desperate lie,” she said.
