University of Abuja expels students over exam malpractice and drug offences
The University of Abuja, also known as UNIABUJA, has approved the expulsion of 28 students and the withdrawal of certificates belonging to 15 former students.
The decision was taken at the university’s 191st Senate meeting held in January and later made public in Abuja. The management said the action followed the recommendations of the Student Disciplinary Committee after a thorough investigation.
According to reports by The Punch, the expelled students were found guilty of serious offences. These include examination malpractice, theft, cult-related activities, conspiracy, assault, burglary, drug possession and use, falsification of admission results, and refusal to honour invitations from the disciplinary committee.
The university also explained that the certificates of 15 former students were revoked because they ignored several summons to appear before the disciplinary panel, despite being given multiple opportunities to defend themselves.
A statement signed by Habib Yakoob, the acting director of information and university relations, said the Senate approved the sanctions to maintain discipline and protect the integrity of the institution.
The statement added that not all students who appeared before the committee were punished. Nine undergraduates were cleared of all allegations after investigations, while 33 others received official warnings for offences such as fighting, hostel racketeering, and conspiracy.
Reacting to the development, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to upholding discipline and academic integrity.
Meanwhile, UNIABUJA recently secured a N4 billion grant under the 2026 Special Intervention for Health Professions programme. The funding, provided through the Federal Ministry of Education and TETFund, will be used to improve facilities and equipment in the university’s health-related faculties.
The university management stated that while it remains committed to students’ welfare, it will not tolerate actions that undermine academic standards and campus safety.
