Ellen DeGeneres: Why I Moved to the UK After Trump’s 2024 Win

American television host Ellen DeGeneres revealed she and her wife, Portia de Rossi, permanently relocated to the UK’s Cotswolds region following Donald Trump’s re-election as U.S. President in November 2024.

Speaking at a live conversation with broadcaster Richard Bacon at Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, on July 20, 2025, DeGeneres explained, “We arrived the day before the election, woke up to crying emojis from friends and I knew he won.” Initially planning to spend three to four months annually in their Cotswolds home, the couple decided to stay permanently after Trump’s victory, citing a better quality of life. “It’s clean. Everything here is just better – the way animals are treated, people are polite. I just love it here,” she added.

DeGeneres also expressed concerns about threats to LGBTQ+ rights in the U.S., particularly moves by the Southern Baptist Convention in June 2025 to reverse same-sex marriage. She noted that she and de Rossi, married since 2008, are considering remarrying in the UK as a precaution.

The move follows the end of The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2022 after 19 seasons, amid allegations of a toxic workplace, which DeGeneres addressed in her 2024 Netflix special, For Your Approval, and at the Cheltenham event, saying, “I’m a direct person, and I’m very blunt, and I guess sometimes that means that… I’m mean? I hate that people think that because I know I’m empathetic.
