Muhammadu Buhari, Former Nigerian President, Dies at 82 in London Hospital

Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has passed away at the age of 82 in a London hospital, marking the end of a significant chapter in Nigeria’s political history.

The announcement came on Sunday, July 13, 2025, according to the post made by his X official account, confirming the death of the former leader who served as both a military head of state and a democratically elected president.

The family of the late president released a statement: “The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus.”

Born on December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State, Buhari’s career spanned decades of public service. He first led Nigeria as military head of state from January 1984 to August 1985, following a coup against Shehu Shagari.

During his military tenure, he launched the War Against Indiscipline (WAI), a campaign to promote public order and civic responsibility.

In 1994, under the Sani Abacha regime, he served as Executive Chairman of the Petroleum Trust Fund, overseeing significant infrastructure projects across Nigeria.

Buhari’s political journey saw him contest the presidency in 2003, 2007, and 2011 without success. His persistence paid off in 2015 when, under the All Progressives Congress (APC), he defeated incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan, becoming the first opposition candidate to unseat a sitting president through the ballot box in Nigeria’s democratic history.

He secured a second term in 2019, serving until May 29, 2023, when he handed over power to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and retired to his hometown of Daura.

Throughout his career, Buhari was recognized for his discipline and anti-corruption efforts, though his tenure faced criticism for economic challenges and security issues.

He was honored with several distinctions, including the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR), Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR), Defence Service Medal, National Service Medal, Forces Service Star, Global Seal of Integrity, and the Congo Medal.

As Nigeria mourns, details of funeral arrangements are yet to be disclosed. Buhari’s legacy as a leader who shaped Nigeria’s political landscape through discipline and determination will continue to spark reflection and debate.
