Vote Counting Begins in Yaba Amid Low Voter Turnout in 2025 Lagos LG Election
Vote counting began at Polling Unit 024, Ward B, in Makoko, Yaba, on July 12, 2025, signaling the close of the Lagos local government election across the state’s 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).
However, the vote counting process in Yaba was overshadowed by widespread low voter turnout, raising concerns about the election’s impact. An election observer noted, “The lack of voter enthusiasm could impact the credibility and inclusiveness of the exercise,” echoing sentiments across Yaba’s polling units.
At Polling Unit 002 in Ward B, Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) officials waited for voters as vote counting started elsewhere, highlighting the sluggish participation.
Similar trends were reported at Ward F, Unit 012 along Iwaya Road, where voting continued but turnout remained significantly lower than expected. In contrast, Ward G at St. Timothy College, with polling units 001–005, saw orderly voting, offering a glimpse of an organized process despite the broader challenge of low voter turnout in Yaba.
Election observers praised the peaceful atmosphere but expressed concern that low voter engagement could undermine the election’s credibility. LASIEC officials urged voters to cast ballots before the 3:00 PM closure, emphasizing efforts to boost participation in the 2025 Lagos LG election.
