Lagos LG Poll: Immigration Explains Why Seme Border Stayed Open

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) Seme Border Command did not close the border during the Lagos LG poll on July 12, 2025, due to a lack of directives from higher authorities. Comptroller Absullahi Adamu, speaking at Seme, clarified that the international border operates under federal jurisdiction, requiring explicit orders for closure.
“There is no information regarding restriction of movement till 3pm, so our status quo remains,” Adamu said. “Closing of an international border should come from higher authority.”

During the Lagos LG poll, which elected officials for 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas, the NIS maintained normal operations at Seme. Adamu noted that foreigners entering Nigeria would have their passports stamped but be advised to wait until 3:00 PM, aligning with the state’s movement restrictions, before leaving the border area. He added, “The border cannot be closed against people coming into the country but the service can only advise them to wait till 3p.m after stamping them in before leaving the border.”

Adamu emphasized that the Seme Border Command would comply with any future orders to restrict movement during the Lagos LG poll or similar events, ensuring flexibility while maintaining regular border functions.
